Biodegradable Champagne packaging

We have been announced as one of three nominees for the Food Valley awards. This competition has been around for many years and annually picks the most promising innovations within the agrifood (related) industry.

Our contribution is the world’s first biodegradable Champagne packaging made out of our PaperFoam material. This packaging was created in close cooperation with Veuve Clicquot and French design Agency Cedric Ragot.

This gift packaging has a ridged design and thanks to PaperFoam’s isothermal properties it keeps the bottle cool for up to 2 hours. The design is simple but effective, consisting of 2 PaperFoam parts with a paper wrapper.

The main issue we had to overcome was the condensation of the cold bottle inside the packaging. Because PaperFoam is made out of starch and natural fibers normally this would get sticky. To solve this we developed a special recipe in cooperation with Wageningen University & Research, this research was partly funded by the province Gelderland in the Netherlands.

Currently the “Naturally Clicquot” Champagne packaging with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne bottle is  being produced and sold worldwide.

From the 3 nominees one winner will be selected during the Food Valley Expo 2014, held on October 23th. The award will take place in Papendal, the Netherlands.
